It wasn’t the way the Umatilla Vikings wanted to start their football season.

It wasn’t the way they wanted to start a game, either.

Union’s Tayt Duby fielded the opening kickoff at his own 30-yard line in Umatilla on Friday and sprinted down the far sideline. In five seconds, Umatilla was already down 6-0, setting the tone for the game.

Union (1-0) used a solid and aggressive running attack to outrun and out-muscle Umatilla (0-1) to a 50-6 victory.

A bright spot for Umatilla was the always-tough running by junior Kasen Manley. Running headlong into Bobcat defenders all night, Manley lived up to his last name, running tough inside while being gang tackled, even when the game was out of reach. He finished with 52 yards on 12 carries.

Umatilla’s lone score came on a rollout for Ramirez, a common play for Umatilla’s offense. From eight yards out, Ramirez broke a couple of tackles, dodged a couple more and lowered his shoulder to get into the end zone. It was a highlight for Ramirez, who threw two interceptions and had one fumble.

Because of the Pendleton Round-Up, Umatilla will host Pilot Rock at 7 p.m. Thursday.
