Irrigon’s Collins named MVP of EOL for volleyball

The Irrigon Knights made school history this season with their first trip to the 3A state volleyball tournament.

The honors keep rolling in for the team as sophomore libero MaKenna Collins was named the Eastern Oregon League Player of the Year.

Collins finished league play with 220 digs, and served at 94 percent with 11 aces.

Collins was joined on the first team by teammate Haley White, a junior outside hitter. White had 119 kills on the season, along with 25 blocks and 12 aces. She served at 84 percent.

On the honorable mention team, the Knights had setter Emma Mueller, outside hitter Myka Davis and opposite hitter Nikki Phillips.

Umatilla outside hitter Charlene Alvarez was named to the second team, while Riverside middle Megan Hegar was selected to the honorable mention team.

The Knights finished third in the EOL standings, but finished second at district to qualify for state, where they were swept by South Umpqua in the first round.

Irrigon also received the Sportsmanship Award from the Blue Mountain Conference Officials Association, and had the highest GPA in the state among 3A volleyball teams at 3.91.
