Heppner senior Logan Grieb is just six strokes behind tournament leader Joel Snyder of Oakridge after the first round at the OSAA State Championships at Eagle Crest Ridge Course on Monday.
Grieb recovered from a rough start and shot three-over par with 75, and Snyder was three under with 69. Grieb is tied for fifth.
Grieb opened his round with three bogeys and one double bogey on the first five holes to go five over, and made the turn at four over. His six on the par-five No. 9 was his last bogey of the day, and he started his back nine with four straight pars before a birdie on the par-five No. 14, and four more pars to close the round.
Heppner is fifth in team scoring with 358. The Mustangs will have their sights set on fourth-place Portland Adventist in Round 2, and trail them by just seven strokes.
Also for Heppner on Monday, Dan Bretsch is 23rd with 87, Jake Lindsay is 39th with 94, and Kellen Grant and Logan Burright are tied for 49th with 102.
Heppner’s Sophie Grant and Nicole Propheter were 16 strokes back tied in ninth with 87’s at Trysting Tree Golf Club in Corvallis on Monday in the OSAA State Championships..
The Mustangs head into the final round in second place in team scoring, 21 strokes behind St. Mary’s with a 351.
Also for Heppner on Monday. Amanda Rea is tied for 17th with 97, Madison Combe is tied for 26th with 101, and Clair Grieb is tied for 38th with 110.
