A big second quarter by Lewiston was more than Hermiston could handle on Friday night.
The Bengals went on a 20-11 run in the second to take a 28-20 lead en route to a 57-45 victory over the Bulldogs at the Dawg House.
“It’s a measuring stick,” Hermiston coach Juan Rodriguez said. “We knew without Jordan (Thomas) it would be hard to score. We are young and it was the first varsity game for some of them,”
The 6-foot-4 Thomas, who was in a minor car accident Monday, was held out of the game for precautionary measures.
In a first quarter where there were only three made baskets, the Bulldogs (0-1) took a 9-8 lead, getting five of their points at the free-throw line.
Hermiston stretched its lead to 13-8 early in the second quarter, and led 20-14 after Katelyn Heideman drained a 3-pointer.
But the well went dry for the Bulldogs in the last 4 minutes of the first half.
Lewiston would score the first six points of the third quarter, and led 34-20 before the Bulldogs finally hit a shot, ending a 7 minute, 6 second drought.
Hermiston would match the Bengals point for point in the quarter, but trailed 42-34. The Bulldogs got no closer than nine points in the fourth quarter. The Bengals could have extended their in lead the last minute of the game, but went 2 of 7 from the free-throw line. For the game, the Bengals were 21 of 34.
“Our defense was good, but we got tired and started fouling,” Rodriguez said.
Jazlyn Romero led the Bulldogs with 16 points, and played all but about 2 minutes of the game.
“Because of Jordan not being in, Jazlyn was in all the time,” Rodriguez said. “I thought she did a good job.”
Sophomore Kendall Dowdy added seven points for Hermiston, which shot 11 of 21 from the free-throw line.
Caitlin Richardson led Lewiston with 16 points, while Kendyll Kinzer chipped in 12.
The Bulldogs will host La Grande on Tuesday, which gives them time to work on a few things, according to Rodriguez.
“We are athletic,” he said. “We are fast, we played good defense and our transition was good. There are things to work on. It’s fixable stuff.”
