A first-quarter touchdown was all the Hendon Construction Dolphins needed to claim the Hermiston Grid Kids 5th/6th title over the Washington Group International Cowboys, 8-0, on Saturday at Kennison Field.

Dolphins quarterback Joey Gutierrez scampered 20 yards for the game’s only touchdown with time winding down in the first period, but the defense took center stage and was able to take advantage of Cowboy miscues.

With 2:09 left in the game, the Dolphins made a critical defensive stand to force the Cowboys to punt. On third-and-6 and under a minute left, CJ Hendon came up huge for his team, gaining eight yards on a run up the middle to earn the Dolphins a first down.

After Hendon’s run, the Dolphins were able to kneel on the ball and claim the victory.

The Cowboys also had a key stop to keep their title hopes alive, stuffing the Dolphins with 4:53 left in the fourth.

Sixth-grader Ty Knutz broke through the line and tackled Gutierrez to turn the ball over on downs.

Hunter Walls had an interception for the Cowboys in the third quarter, but Gutierrez had a pick of his own to end the frame.

The Dolphins ended the year with an 8-1 record. The Cowboys finished 7-2, with both losses coming to the Dolphins.
