The Echo Cougars volleyball team beat the Helix Grizzlies in four sets, 25-19, 25-19, 24-26 and 25-1, Thursday at Griswold High School.

It was Echo’s second victory over Helix this season. With the win the Cougars improved their league record to 4-4 and 7-7 overall.

Head coach Janice Scott said it was a roller-coaster match with neither team separating itself from the other.

“It was up and down the entire night,” Scott said. “The scores aren’t indicative of how close the first two sets were.”

Scott said her team suffered from too many unforced errors.

“We had a lot of serving errors tonight,” she said. “We couldn’t keep the ball in play at times. We made some mistakes hitting, but fortunately it didn’t cost us the match.”

Senior Eme Denning once again led the way for the Cougars. She totaled 12 solo blocks and only had one serving error throughout the match.

“Eme was great, she kept us in the game,” Scott said. “She really played well at the net. That was definitely the highlight for us.”

The Grizzlies were much improved from earlier in the season, Scott said.

“They were more consistent this time around,” she said. “They made it tougher on us. It was a good challenge.”

Helix head coach Tammy Parker said she liked how her team battled.

“We are working hard each and every day,” she said. “We are a young team, but we have gotten better each week, and that’s the focus right now.”
