The Echo Cougars volleyball team fell in straight sets to the Condon Knights 25-17, 25-11, 25-12 Friday at Echo. It was the Cougars second loss to Condon in the last week.
The Knights have Echos number this season, Cougar head coach Janice Scott said.
They hit hard, Scott said. Sometimes theres nothing we can do to stop it.
In an interesting first set, the Cougars traded punches with the Knights for a majority of the game before falling. That intensity from the first set took a lot out of the Cougars as their energy level lagged for the rest of the match.
Scott liked the way her team battled in the first set, but noted that her team wasnt as fired up throughout.
We played with a ton of heart and effort in that first set, she said. Normally we can keep that intensity for an entire match. Tonight we werent able to do that.
There were a couple of bright spots for the Cougars, however. Scott praised the play of seniors Eme Denning and Kaci Kamm.
Eme had a few great blocks and hits, Kaci as well, she said. They were both active tonight.
Denning said the main focus was trying to slow down Condon senior Ellie Logan.
Ellies a very strong hitter, Denning said. She hits it harder than anyone on our team. Its tough to block.
Even with the loss, Denning said she thinks the team is getting better every week.
Weve improved so much since the beginning of the season, she said. We are going to keep working together.
Denning injured her elbow late in the third set trying to block a spike from Logan.
She consistently hits it that hard, Denning said. Theres not much we can do. You just have to give her credit for that.
She was in good spirits after the game, and said shed be ready for the next match.
The Cougars next play Ione at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at Echo.
