The Bulldogs reached the end zone seven times in the first half of their 49-22 thrashing of Hillsboro Friday night.

Junior quarterback Chase Knutz connected on 20 of his 37 pass attempts for 348 yards and three touchdowns to pace the Bulldogs’ high-octane offense.

Sure-handed receiver Ramon Contreras was a beneficiary of Knutz’s performance.

Contreras hauled in 12 passes for 222 yards and a touchdown for Hermiston, which built a sizable first-half lead for the second straight week. A week after leading Rex Putnam 41-0 at the break, the Bulldogs (2-0) built a 42-0 advantage against the Spartans (1-1).

Costa Rodriguez led Hermiston on the ground, churning out 117 yards on 16 carries to go with a pair of touchdowns.

Rodriguez, who rushed for 152 yards and three touchdowns against Putnam, took over the starting role in the backfield this week with Trenten Anteau sidelined with an ankle injury.

Anteau went down in the opening minutes against Putnam and has yet to return.
