The superintendent is blowing this incident way out of proportion. The student involved “expressed remorse” and will have certainly learned their lesson by the time everything gets sorted out — Facebook has already unfortunately seen to that.
Her narrative refers to “starting a campaign to make sure students understand the impact of words when they’re used in that way.”
Unfortunately this “campaign” should have been started way earlier than high school — more like as soon as the child speaks his first words. I’m afraid the superintendent is being pressured into making this whole thing about race — as race is always the narrative of the day it seems.
So my closing remarks is the incident happened and the student felt remorse for their actions. Let’s just move on and while we try and see the seriousness of how it will impact the future of society — let’s also allow ourselves to be able to see a tiny morsel of humor in a kid getting in trouble because they said something they shouldn’t have into a mic. If the superintendent wants to begin a campaign — she should really focus on “the proper use of a microphone” from which the students will probably benefit more.
