Melvin L. Lindquist, 85, of Hermiston died Wednesday, Oct. 27, 2010, at his home with family at his side. A memorial service with military honors was held at 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 1 at New Hope Community Church, 1350 S. Highway 395, in Hermiston.
Mr. Lindquist was born Sept. 10, 1925, in Becker, Minn., to Carl and Leone Lindquist. The family moved to Elk River, Minn., in the late 1930s, where he attended school until 1942. He quit school and joined the Navy for four years, serving two years in Alaska and two years in the Asiatic Pacific, and became an electrician.
Upon discharge he returned home and married Elaine Aldrich in 1946. They moved to Oregon and lived in the Ione area until late 1947, when he started work at the Umatilla Army Depot and they moved to the Hermiston area. He retired in 1974. A year later he went to work at Lamb Weston Potato Plant in Hermiston and stayed until 1989.
Mr. Lindquist is survived by his wife of 64 years, Elaine Lindquist, at the home; sons Jerry of Kennewick, Wash., Randy of Waitsburg, Wash., and Gene of Goodyear, Ariz.; sister Luana Augustson of Cambridge, Minn.; two granddaughters and two grandsons; one great-grandson; and many nieces, nephews, stepgrandchildren, stepgreat-grandchilren and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother Dale; and grandsons Stacey and Ryan Lindquist.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Legion, the VFW Post, New Hope Community Church, or to the Vange John Memorial Hospice.
