HERMISTON Jose Miguel Mike Cano Sr., 84, of Hermiston died Saturday, May 7, 2011, at Regency Hermiston Health & Rehabilitation Center in Hermiston. Recitation of the rosary will be held Tuesday, May 10 at 7 p.m. at Burns Mortuary Chapel in Hermiston. Mass of Christian burial will be held Wednesday, May 11 at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of Angels Catholic Church in Hermiston. Burial will follow at the Echo Cemetery. A luncheon will follow at the parish hall in Hermiston.
Mr. Cano was born Sept. 29, 1926, in Pharr, Texas, to Jose Neveiz and Remiga (Palacios) Cano. He was raised in Pharr and worked as a policeman for the city of Pharr for 15 years. In 1945 he married Feliciana Garza in Pharr. He moved to Los Banos, Calif., and worked in farming. He moved to Hermiston in 1972 and he worked as ranch foreman for the Cook family. He then worked for the Stanfield Irrigation District, retiring in 1998. He returned to Texas in 1999 and returned to Hermiston in 2002.
Mr. Cano is survived by wife Feliciana Cano of Hermiston; children Jose Miguel Cano Jr. of Pharr, Texas, Belinda Helfrecht of Hermiston, Diana B. Reyes of Turlock, Calif., Carlos Cano of Independence, Betty Jean Gutierrez of Pasco, Wash., Willie Cano of Lake Oswego and Hector Cano of Pendleton; brother Guillermo Cano of San Antonio, Texas; 16 grandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by grandson Brian Cano; brother Joe Cano; and sister Dolly Porter.
