IRRIGON Gladys Marie Tuthill Hutchinson, 94, of Irrigon died Sunday, Oct. 31, 2010, at her home. A graveside funeral service was held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 6 at the Juniper Haven Cemetery in Prineville, with a celebration of life following at 11 a.m. at the VFW hall (405 N. Main).
Mrs. Hutchinson was born April 11, 1916, in Los Angeles to Henry and Ida Aylor Tuthill. She grew up in Orchard and San Saba, Texas, and Los Angeles before the family moved to Lyle, Wash., in 1931, where she finished high school. She attended college in Monmouth, receiving her teaching certificate. She married Charles Hutchinson in 1940, and they had two children.
She began teaching in Crook County, teaching in one-room schools. She later taught third grade at Ochoco Elementary School in Prineville. She taught for 28 years before retiring. After Charles died, she assisted her daughter teaching in Umatilla at McNary Elementary School.
Mrs. Hutchinson is survived by children Betty Hutchinson of Irrigon and Bill Hutchinson of Prairie City; sisters Ida May Alling of Coulee Dam, Wash., Elizabeth Myers of Kelso, Wash., Roberta Tuthill of Beaverton and Marion Teckenburg of Hood River; brother Richard Tuthill of Gresham; four grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; twin great-great-grandsons; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband Charles; parents Henry and Ida Tuthill; brothers Philip Tuthill, Henry Tuthill Jr. and Frank Tuthill; and sister Bessie Thompson.
