Janice M. Howland
April 18, 1931 - November 29, 2018
Janice M. Howland of Hermiston, Oregon, was born on April 18, 1931, in Clatskanie, Oregon, to parents Hawkin and Lottie Johnson. She passed away on November 29, 2018, in Hermiston, Oregon, at the age of 87 years.
Her Norwegian heritage was always a very important part of her life. When she was four years old her mother passed away. Her father and her two-year-old brother Robert became the center of her life. Janice and Robert remained a formidable pair throughout the rest of her life.
In 1950 she married Dale Chapman in Clatskanie, Oregon, and soon after two daughters followed. In 1960 they moved to Hermiston, Oregon, to open Hermiston Auto Parts. Together they became a strong part of the community while building a very successful business. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s they welcomed six grandchildren to their family that became the center of their world. They later divorced.
Janice later married Elton Howland.
She enjoyed traveling the world to experience new places. Janice was very involved in the Emblem Club, Good Shepherd Hospital Auxiliary, Friends of the Library, and Smart Reading. She cherished time watching and cheering on her grandchildren in whatever activity they were involved in and was blessed with the addition of 12 great-grandchildren.
She is survived by her daughters Sherry Thompson and husband Joe, Hermiston, Ore., and Peggy Stump and husband John, East Wenatchee, Wash.; brother Robert Johnson, Portland, Ore.; six grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
Janice was preceded in death by her husbands, Dale Chapman and Elton Howland; daughter Nancy Karen Chapman; and her parents.
Janice’s family would like to give a special thank you to the caregivers at the Tuscan House at Guardian Angel Homes for their loving care and compassion.
