HERMISTON Gloria Belle Guthery, 89, of Hermiston died Thursday, Dec. 2, 2010, at Ashley Manor Residential Care Facility in Hermiston. A memorial service will be held at Burns Mortuary Chapel in Hermiston and private family burial of cremains will be at the Pleasant View Cemetery in Stanfield at a later date. Disposition was by cremation.
Mrs. Guthery was born Nov. 9, 1921, in Ontario to George and Anna (Robertson) Glascock. She was raised in Malheur County, living in Nyssa and graduating from high school there. She graduated from Eastern Oregon College in La Grande with her teachers degree and also earned her masters degree in education. She began teaching in Elgin before joining the Army and serving in North Africa and Italy from 1943-1945.
In 1946, she married Stewart Guthery in Boise, Idaho. They lived in several towns, where she taught school and Stewart followed the rodeo circuit, including Elgin, La Grande, Hermiston, Milton-Freewater, Stanfield (where she retired from teaching) and finally back to Hermiston.
Stewart died in 2001. She married Don Day in February 2003 and later divorced.
Mrs. Guthery is survived by daughter Shelley Walker of Hermiston; son Fred Guthery of Stillwater, Okla.; sisters Emma Hite of Nyssa, Thelma Randall of Vancouver, Wash., Laverne Saul of Florida and Lavena Dunn of Ohio; five grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by husband Stewart Guthery and sister Viola Fields.
