Berl C. Mallett was born on January 19, 1918, in Chillicothe, Missouri, to parents Charley E. and Lydia G. Davenport Mallett. He died on June 7, 2012, in Hermiston, Oregon, at the age of 94 years. Berl was raised and attended school in Chula, Missouri. He was a descendent of the Grapes of Wrath era, migrating west with his family, settling in Northern California. Berl was united in marriage to Mernie “Marie” Elliott on August 5, 1940, in Carson City, Nevada. He served in the United States Army during WWII until his honorable discharge when he returned to California.

Berl and Marie raised their 6 children in Yuba City, California, where he worked in farming, in the lumber industry, and as a carpenter. They moved to Stanfield, Oregon, in 1977 and Berl helped his son Gary in his meat cutting business. When Marie retired in 1989 from JR Simplot they moved back to his birthplace and raised a truck garden for the next 20 years. In 2009 they returned to Hermiston, Oregon, to be near family. He enjoyed gardening, time with his family, and Snoopy.

He is survived by his wife of nearly 72 years, Marie Mallett, Hermiston, Ore.; children: Virginia Crum, Tacoma, Wash., Gary Mallett, Hermiston, Ore., Linda Makusky, San Antonio, Texas, Kenneth Mallett, Yuba City, Calif., Velda Dunham, Hermiston, Ore.; brother Ermil Mallett, Yuba City, Calif.; 13 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and 4 great-great-grandchildren.

Berl was preceded in death by his parents, a son, Garland Mallett, and an infant grandson.

A celebration of life service will be held on Monday, June 11, 2012, at 11:00 a.m. at the Stanfield Baptist Church, 310 E. Wheeler, Stanfield, OR 97875.
