Ardell Calvin Engelhart was born July 15, 1926, to Clarence and Ella Engelhart in Brainerd, Minnesota. He died on December 20, 2015, in Hermiston, Oregon, at the age of 89 years.
Ardell attended grade school in Daggett Brook, Minn., and high school at Union College Academy. After high school Ardell came out west with his family to Milton Freewater and attended Walla Walla College for about one year. He began working for Harris Pine Mills.
In 1952 Ardell met Margaret Peterson during a church roller-skating event. They married July 25, 1954, in the old Walla Walla SDA church. Margaret and Ardell had three sons, Mark, Kevin and Andrew, and one daughter, Linda.
During the early years of raising a family, Ardell owned and operated Power City gas station in Umatilla and later began well drilling with Roy French, becoming a trained and licensed well driller for the Hermiston area for 20 years. In the early ’80s the Engelharts moved to southern California where Ardell drilled for oil for a few years before retiring to Vancouver, Washington.
While living in Vancouver, they attended the Orchards SDA church. They treasured their time there. After their retirement they did quite a bit of traveling in and out of the United States.
Ardell was happiest when out visiting friends and making new ones. He knew no strangers. After retiring and before his stroke in 2009, he was always selling something and if you were in his company, he made sure you had opportunity to know all about his product. Besides being a busy salesman, Ardell enjoyed writing poetry, which he eventually would bring together into a book collection. He dearly loved all of his family especially his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Ardell spent his last five and a half years living at the Hermiston Regency Nursing Home. He was named their volunteer of the year in 2011. He enjoyed painting pictures, collecting pop cans, singing hymns and sharing his love for Jesus. He loved the staff and they loved him. He was a member of and attended the Hermiston SDA church and attended church for the last time the day preceding his death.
Ardell is preceded in death by both parents, Clarence and Ella; his four siblings Ruby Crowfoot, Alva Engelhart, Bernard Engelhart and Bernice Kirschenbauer; and his oldest son Mark Engelhart.
A memorial service for Ardell will be held Saturday, January 9, 2016, at 3:00 p.m. at the Hermiston SDA Church, 855 W. Highland Ave.
