HERMISTON Hermiston Community Watch members met with police Thursday to learn more about how citizens can help fight crime.

Gretchen Erickson and Jerry Roberts of Hermiston Police Department spoke at the Neighborhood Watch Meeting, held at Trinity Lutheran Church. Neighborhood Community Watch is an organization in which citizens and police work together to reduce crime.

Among other things, members learn how to make homes secure, how to properly mark and inventory property, and how to work with other neighbors to reduce crime in their own neighborhoods.

Roberts presented the department’s organizational structure, while Erickson explained homeowner strategies for protecting their families and crime-proofing their neighborhoods. ÒA police department is only as good as the citizens that are working with it,Ó she said. ÒYou are your neighborhood’s experts.Ó (For the full story please see the January 29, 2002 issue of the Hermiton Herald.)
