BOARDMAN After an early see-saw battle, the Umatilla Vikings ran away from the Riverside Pirates in Boardman Friday night, 42-24.
Umatilla opened up the scoring on a 40-yard touchdown pass from Steven Williams to Levi Russell and a successful 2-point conversion to go up 8-0.
Riverside answered back when Daniel Hansen ran the ball in from a yard out to cut the Vikings' lead to 8-6.
Umatilla running back Nathan Creason had another standout game Friday and put the Vikings further ahead with a 4-yard run in the second quarter.
Trailing 15-6, The Pirates' Hansen scored again on a 6 yard run to cut into the Umatilla lead, 15-12.
That was as good as it got for Riverside, however, as Umatilla scored on a 3-yard run by Creason to take a 22-12 lead into halftime.
The Vikings blew it open by scoring twice in the third quarter to take a 34-12 lead on a 38-yard touchdown pass from Williams to Luis De La Paz and another touchdown run by Creason, this time from 18 yards out.
Riverside was able to cut into the Umatilla lead on a touchdown pass from Bryce Doherty to Aaron Van Gorder in the third and fourth quarters, but Umatilla and Creason sealed the win in the fourth when Creason ran it in from 11 yards out and followed it up with a 2-point conversion off a pass thrown by Williams.
Creason tallied 168 yards on the ground on 21 carries and four touchdowns. Williams was 7-of-14 for 146 yards.
The win helped the Vikings keep pace in conference play. At 5-1 overall and 1-1 in conference, Umatilla trails Eastern Oregon leaders Grant Union (2-0) and Vale (2-0) by just a game. The Pirates fell to 2-4 overall and 0-2 in league play.
The Vikings take on Grant Union on Friday.
