Veterans Day is Nov. 11, and numerous groups are hosting events to honor current and past members of the military.

This Friday, Nov. 4, West Park Elementary will host an assembly for veterans at 8:30 a.m. in the school gym. Veterans and active duty personnel from each branch of the Armed Forces are invited to see students present the nation’s colors, sing patriotic songs and give brief comments about Veteran’s Day.

During the next week, the Hermiston Lions Club will help first-graders recognize veterans by delivering flags to their classes, and on Friday, Nov. 11, veterans recognition begins with the second annual Veteran’s Day Breakfast at 8 a.m. at the Hermiston Conference Center.

“We’re looking forward to honoring our veterans. This is a day we can set aside to honor them, let them know how much we appreciate what they have done for our country and how much they mean to us,” said Debbie Pedro, Hermiston Chamber of Commerce director. “This is an opportunity to bring the veterans together to get to share their stories with each other, to see their friends and acquaintances. We’re looking forward to being able to honor them, do something to bring everyone together.”

At the breakfast, the primary speaker with be Dr. Dean Hackett, a veteran, and the meal is free for veterans and their families.

That night, veterans also have two opportunities to have a free meal.

One dinner is sponsored by the Girl Scouts of Oregon and Southwest Washington Service Unit 22, who will host their ninth annual Veterans Day dinner at 5:30 p.m. Nov. 11 at the National Guard Armory.

The evening will include a free meal and door prizes. Admission is free to all veterans and current military members, as well as one guest per veteran. For more information, call Michelle Kane at 541-564-5985.
