The Umatilla County District Attorney's office confirmed Monday night officers from the Hermiston Police Department shot and killed a suspect this afternoon at the Hermiston Liquor store.
The officers followed the man to the store after reports of a robbery at the Community Bank on Theater Lane, and the man pointed "what appeared to be a black semi-automatic handgun" at the officers before they discharged their weapons.
Eyewitnesses reported seeing the bank robbery suspect leave the bank, cross Highway 395, walk through the Fiesta Foods parking lot, and enter the Hermiston Liquor Store, according to a press release from the Umatilla County District Attorney's Office. Soon after the suspect entered the liquor store, two Hermiston Police Department officers attempted to contact the suspect. Eyewitnesses reported seeing the suspect draw what appeared to be a black semi-automatic handgun and point it at the officers. The officers responded by discharging their duty weapons.
Hermiston Fire and Emergency Services was called to the parking lot for shots fired and a man wounded at about 3:35 p.m.
The release confirms the suspect was taken by ambulance to Good Shepherd Medical Center. He was treated at the Hermiston hospital, but medical staff determined the suspect had died around 7 p.m.
Information about the victim, including name and age, has not been released.
