Students recognized Six Umatilla students were recognized at the winter Breakfast of Champions event on Thursday.

Umatilla High School honored Norma Chavez and Edgar Magana Clara Brownell Middle School recognized Skyler Stokoe and Tristan Cole, and McNary Heights Elementary highlighted Julian Martinez and Sebastian Ortiz.

Umatilla High School also announced its Students of the Month for December: Caitlin Nelson and Daniel Garcilazo.

Port outlines marina improvements From 1992-2012, the Port of Umatilla spent $957,034.77 on capital improvements to the Umatilla Marina and RV Park, according to a document released by the Port on Wednesday.

“This is just capital improvements in the last 10 years,” Port director Kim Puzey said. “This is not day-to-day costs.”

The Marina improvements include $24,594 for a launch ramp float replacement in 1992-93, $518,000 for the construction of B dock in 2003-04, $31,445 for a marina fence and $28,321 to upgrade the marine fuel station in 2005-06.

The Port of Umatilla has managed the Umatilla Marina and RV Park for decades, but notified the Corps of Engineers.

Chili Cook-Off to return

The 15th annual Umatilla Kiwanis Chili Cook-Off will return to Umatilla High School at 6 p.m. Jan. 25.

Anyone can sign up to compete, and entries will be judged by popular vote. Volunteer cooks are asked to register, but entry is free.

On Jan. 25, the cooks will set up their chili entries in the high school commons, and for $3, anyone can become a guest judge to sample as many of the entries as desired.

The winner will be declared based on votes from all those who sampled chili. The dessert auction will also return this year.

The annual event raises funds for Kiwanis scholarships for local high school students. For more information, call Jane Starner at 541-922-5716.

Winter streetlight study on South Hill

Local resident John Nichols will begin a cold weather survey of street light use in South Hill this month. Nichols will record information about street lights and their operations.

“I want it known I”m going ot start another survey this month,” Nichols said. “I don’t want to be confronted by a concerned citizen about a pickup driving slow around South Hill.”

FIRM seeks volunteers

FIRM — Friends Inspiring Reading and Math — is looking for volunteers. The program matches volunteer adults with students at McNary Heights Elementary to help tutor basic reading and math assignments.

Volunteer coordinator Mary Dedrick is looking for volunteers on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Friday. Each appointment is about an hour.

“It’s a great program. The kids are always very excited when they come in, and it’s never anything too difficult,” volunteer Karen Hutchinson-Talaski said Tuesday. For more information, call Dedrick at 541-922-6703.
