HERMISTON — The medal podium got a little crowded as more and more Olympians walked up to receive their hardware during the medal awards ceremony Friday morning.

Weather was not a concern for these ceremonies because they were inside and far from Salt Lake City’s wintery conditions. The festivities took place right in Hermiston at Desert View Elementary School.

The athletes were second-grade students in Tammy Perkins’ class, and their Olympic events were more likely to tax their minds than their muscles. Students received gold medals for their writing, reading and math performance.

Abbey Walker, an intern teacher at Desert View, came up with the Olympic activities. She wanted to combine the excitement of the Olympics with learning activities.
