STANFIELD — Spring cleaning has city officials up to their necks in other people’s trash. It is not fair, they say, and what started as a good thing grew into a huge mess.

“We liked doing this spring cleaning every year, but some people have taken unfair advantage of it,” City Administrator Shelley Bonnett said last week after throwing another carton into the bucket of a front end loader.

Every spring, the city does a “free” pickup of yard trash. But some people have started saving an entire year’s trash for the free pickup day, Bonnett says.

The transfer station allows free dumping for a limited time each spring, but some people no longer take advantage of the free dumping days because they know the city will be coming around to do the work for them. (For the rest of the story see the May 1, 2001 issue of the Hermiston Herald.)
