HERMISTON Herbert Herb Harold Snider died Friday, July 13, at Good Shepherd Medical Center in Hermiston at the age of 86.
Herb was born June 9, 1915, in Dayton, Wash., to William E. and Maude Snider. He graduated from Dayton High School. He married Bernice Kennedy on June 7, 1936.
He worked as a mechanic in the state of Washington. He also sang and played drums in several bands around Walla Walla, Wash., and Dayton, Wash. He and Bernice divorced in 1948.
He then married Mildred Baumiester. Herb worked on several ranches, including Key Brothers Ranch in Milton-Freewater. He hunted wild horses in the Horse Heaven Hills, catching and breaking them for ranches in eastern Oregon and Washington. He and Mildred owned and operated the Airport Cafe in Walla Walla and Midges Tic Toc (formerly Walla Cafe) in Kennewick, Wash. He and Mildred divorced.
Herb moved to Hermiston in 1968. He worked as a mechanic for Lamb Weston in Hermiston. He married Sylvia Cassens on Oct. 3, 1969. Herb retired from Lamb Weston in the 1980s. He enjoyed repairing lawn mowers and chain saws. He liked to hunt and fish. He and Sylvia loved to dance and many a Saturday night they danced with the seniors at the CRC building in Hermiston. He enjoyed the senior dinners at the senior centers in both Hermiston and Stanfield.
He is survived by his wife, Sylvia of Hermiston; daughters, Lavelle Vance of Sumas, Wash., Aletha Westerberg of Astoria, Kathy Erwin of Pickens, S.C., Christine Watts of Cartersville, Va., Lorraine Ballweber of Portland and Cindy Harmon of Elma, Wash.; sons, Clifford Snider of Dayton, Wash., and Larry Snider of Spokane, Wash.; sister, Wilma Campbell of Davenport, Wash.; sister-in-law, Glenna Snider of Spokane, Wash.; 19 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; four stepchildren; and numerous stepgrandchildren, great- and great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son, Harold Pat Snider; sister, Faye Smith; brother, James Snider; granddaughters, Shannandoah Vance and Dondi Beck; step-son, Jimmy Cassens; and step-daughter, Wilma Ferguson.
Graveside inurnment will be held Sunday, July 29, at 1:30 p.m. at the Hermiston Cemetery. Disposition was by cremation.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, the Hermiston Senior Center or to the Stanfield Senior Center. Burns Mortuary of Hermiston is in charge of the arrangements.
