HERMISTON — John Bernard Sjurset, Jr. died Sunday, May 11, 2003, at Good Shepherd Medical Center in Hermiston, the result of an automobile accident, at the age of 46.

John was born Nov. 12, 1956, in Oak Harbor, Wash., to John Bernard and Goldie G. (Dallman) Sjurset, Sr. He moved to Hermiston in 1959 and graduated from Hermiston High School in 1974.

He then joined the U.S. Army and served in Germany. After the service, he attended Blue Mountain Community College for two years, then attended and graduated from Portland State University with a degree in accounting. He soon earned his certified public accountants license.

He worked for the Visiting Nurses Association for a few years before starting his own business, Health Care Management West, which he operated for several years until his death.

On July 2, 1983, he married Karen Newman in Portland. They later divorced.

On Dec. 10, 2002, he married Cindy Hein in Key West, Fla.

He enjoyed golfing and traveling. John was an avid outdoorsman who loved fishing, hunting and being in the mountains.

He is survived by his wife, Cindy Sjurset of Portland; mother, Goldie Sjurset of Pendleton; father, John B. Sjurset, Sr. of Hanson, Ky.; brothers, Stephen Sjurset of Pendleton and Mike Sjurset of Reno, Nev.; and sister, Dawn Askey of Hopkinsville, Ky.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Anthony Sjurset.

A memorial service was held Thursday, May 15, 2003, at Burns Mortuary Chapel in Hermiston. A private cremation will follow the service.

A memorial service and inurnment was held at Skyline Memorial Gardens Chapel in Portland on Friday, May 16, 2003, at 2 p.m.

Burns Mortuary of Hermiston was in charge of the arrangements.
