James M. Schoenwald

WALLA WALLA, Wash. James M. Schoenwald of Elgin died Tuesday, Feb. 25, at St. Mary Medical Center in Walla Walla, Wash., at the age of 60.
He was born on April 5, 1942, in Minot, N.D. to Melvin H. and Dorothy (Harshberger) Schoenwald. He was raised in Burlington, N.D., and Walla Walla, Wash. He had been a resident of Elgin for more than 35 years.
He married Sherry J. Marler on Oct. 20, 1979, in Walla Walla and worked for Boise Cascade in Elgin for over 35 years. He had also been a locksmith and owner of Valley Lock & Key in Elgin.
He served in Germany and Vietnam with the 82nd Airborne Division from April 30, 1959, to July 3, 1962.
He enjoyed fishing, camping, sailing and hunting. He is a long-standing member of the VFW.
He is survived by his wife, Sherry of Elgin; two stepsons, Scott Johnson of Roseburg and Stanley Johnson of La Grande; two sisters, Kay Shariff of Casper, Wyo., and Susan Smith of Hermiston; two half-sisters, Beverly Conn and Barbara Given, both of Colorado; one brother, Richard Schoenwald of Clarkston, Wash.; two nieces and one nephew.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Disposition was by cremation and no services will be held at his request.
