Folks hoping to see former Hermiston High School basketball star Shoni Schimmel on the tube Tuesday afternoon were in for a disappointment.

Schimmel, now a star for ninth-ranked Louisville, was serving a two-game NCAA suspension because of her participation in the 3-on-3 "Takin' It to the Streets" tournament in Hermiston last summer.

Schimmel missed the first game of the season (Missouri State), then missed Tuesday afternoon's nationally televised game against Texas A&M.

The NCAA bars athletes from playing in non-sanctioned events, especially those that offer prizes for winning.

The rules for the Hermiston 3-on-3 tournament clearly state:

"All high school and college players are encouraged to check with their coaches and/or athletic directors about participating in Takin' it to the Streets and the potential effects on their eligibility. Takin' it to the Streets is not responsible for determining a particular athlete's eligibility under National Collegiate Athletic Association or applicable high school association rules."
