HERMISTON — Former Hermiston Police Chief Bob Shannon devoted 22 years of his life to the city as a public servant and even more years as an active community member.

City officials plan to repay the late Shannon by renaming the Hermiston Public Safety Center the "Bob Shannon Safety Center." The dedication ceremony will be at 9 a.m. on Wednesday at the Safety Center.

A resolution announcing the change was read during the city council meeting Monday night. Shannon's family was in attendance for the reading.

Workers will install the new lettering on the public safety building today.

"He was a great guy and we are going to miss him tremendously," said Mayor Bob Severson. "It is a great honor to be able to do this for Bob."

Shannon served as police chief from Aug. 25, 1969 to July 1, 1991.
