Rotary youth exchange under way

Victor Polete de Moura, left, is a foreign exchange student from Brazil. Skylie Cooley of Irrigon will be an outbound exchange student during the 2008-09 school year.

HERMISTON — Wyatt Harris, a junior at Hermiston High School, began his foreign exchange on August 21 when he left for Taiwan.

Wyatt is living in Taipei, Taiwan, and is immersing himself in the study of the Chinese language and culture. During his exchange, Wyatt will stay with two or more families over the course of his ten month exchange. Wyatt is the son of Cal and Midge Harris of Hermiston.

On Sept. 23, the Rotary Club of Hermiston welcomed Victor Polete de Moura from Brazil to begin his exchange. Victor is currently staying with the Jim and Becky Stearns family and is adjusting to his new schedule. In addition to attending Hermiston High School, Victor plans to participate in soccer and tennis for the Bulldogs.

The Rotary Club of Hermiston has selected Skylie Cooley as an outbound exchange candidate for the 2008-09 school year.

Skylie, the daughter of Bob and Lanita Cooley, is a sophomore at Irrigon High School and is active in 4H and a member of the Knights' varsity cheerleading squad. While her destination won't be determined until February, Skylie is looking for an exchange to Spain, England, or Sweden as her top choices.

The Rotary Club of Hermiston has been involved with the Youth Exchange Program for more than twenty years, sponsoring students during their junior year for an exchange in a foreign country and hosting exchange students from around the world.

For freshmen students interested in participating in the Rotary Exchange program during the school year 2009-10, or for families interested in hosting exchange students, please contact Steve Williams, chairman of the Youth Exchange Committee for the Rotary Club of Hermiston at 567-8315.
