HERMISTON Raymond E. "Ray" Heyworth died on April 2, at the Good Shepherd Medical Center in Hermiston at the age of 74.
He was born on Oct., 10, 1932 in Portland to Earl and Thelma Smith Heyworth.
He was raised and attended school in Spokane, Wash., before joining the United States Navy and serving in Korea during the war. Ray married Dixie M. Ottosen on June 27, 1958 in Fairfield, Wash. He worked for the Great Northern Railroad in Spokane and then moved to Hermiston in 1959, working for the Union Pacific Railroad as a car inspector until 1976. Ray also worked for Silver Wheel Freight Lines overlapping some of the same time from 1967 until 1983. In 1984, Ray went to work for J.R. Simplot and worked there until retiring in 1994. After taking some time off Ray decided to go back to work, taking a job as a greeter at Wal-Mart in Hermiston. He enjoyed fishing, working around the house, and visiting with people.
He was a longtime member of the Hermiston Eagles Lodge #2909.
He is survived by his wife, Dixie M. Heyworth, Hermiston; son, Orville Heyworth, Belleville, Ill.; daughter, Julie Dunagan, Hermiston; sister, Eileen J. Mundy, Spokane, Wash.; three granddaughters, April, Yvonne, and Krystal; and numerous nieces and nephews. Ray was preceded in death by his parents.
A funeral service will be held on Friday, April 6, at 1 p.m., at Burns Mortuary Chapel in Hermiston. Burial will follow at the Hermiston Cemetery.
