Betty Joyce Rankin

June 26, 1919-April 3, 2001

HERMISTON — Betty Joyce Rankin died on Tuesday, April 3, at her home in Hermiston at the age of 82.

Betty was born on June 26, 1919, in Umatilla to Elmore and Mirian McKenzie. She was raised in Umatilla and graduated from Umatilla High School in 1937. She married Fred H. Rankin on Aug. 3, 1941. She had been a resident of Hermiston since 1941.

Betty attended St. Anthony’s School of Nursing and Doernbecher’s Children’s Hospital in Portland in 1940. During her 35 years of nursing, she worked for the American Lakes Army Hospital, was sole medical staff at Ordinance during its construction, and was an original nurse at Good Shepherd Hospital in Hermiston. She retired from Good Shepherd Hospital in 1981.

Betty enjoyed salmon fishing, beach combing, reading and playing bridge. She was a member of St. Johns Episcopal Church.

Betty is survived by her husband, Fred Rankin, daughter, Vicki L. Doolin, and son, Rick Rankin, all of Hermiston; sister, Jean Brownhill of Eugene; three grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral service was held Saturday, April 7, at St. Johns Epscopal Church in Hermiston. Burial followed in the Hermiston Cemetery.

Contributions can be made to the St. Johns Episcopal Memorial Fund. Burns Mortuary of Hermiston was in charge of the arrangements.
