Police arrest arson suspect

have arrested a suspect in connection with the arson of a Hermiston

Irrigation District pickup on Oct. 29.

Hermiston police Wednesday arrested Marcelino Gonzalez Ortiz, 51,

and charged him with second-degree arson, a Class C felony, and

first-degree criminal trespass, Class A misdemeanor. Police booked

Ortiz into the Umatilla County Jail in Pendleton where he remains

in lieu of $11,000 bail.

Lt. Jason Edmiston said in an e-mail that Ortiz is a former

Hermiston Irrigation District employee and the arrest was related

to the arson fire.

Oct. 29, shortly before 11 p.m., Hermiston police and fire

departments responded to a vehicle fire at the Hermiston Irrigation

District office, 366 E. Hurlburt Ave. A white 1998 Dodge Ram pickup

had been set on fire within a fenced compound. The fire destroyed

the pickup’s rear tires and bed and damaged some tools inside the

bed.

said he would have more information about the arrest later

today.
