Grant, Pendleton store

fund robotics team at UHS

The newly formed Robotics Team at Umatilla High School will compete with FIRST Robotics — — this year thanks to a grant and a donation from the Pendleton J.C. Penney.

In October, the Umatilla School District learned a grant application had been approved for funding from the Oregon Department of Education. That $6,600 will help the team build a robot and enter the regional competition. Support from the Pendleton store will fully pay for registration expenses and the robotics kit.

Desert River Inn celebrates veterans

During the month of November, Desert River Inn will display a “White Table” presentation to honor veterans.

The "White Table" is a small table set for one to symbolize one soldier's lonely battle against many. It originated during the Vietnam era to represent every branch of the military and has become a universal sign for all soldiers missing in action or prisoners of war.

Also on display will be a Battle Ensign, the name given to a large war flag which is flown on a warship's mast just before going into battle. A large war ensign was hoisted by warships for ease of identification during naval engagements. The battle ensign is sometimes also flown by U.S. Navy warships as a courtesy when entering or leaving foreign ports.

The Desert River Inn would like to honor and thank all of our country's soldiers for the sacrifices they and their families endure, so that we can all live in a free and safe society.
