Anyone looking for gifts and home decor, from candles and art to easels and clocks, will have a new place to shop as Peachy Keen celebrates its grand opening from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday.

"I'm hoping people will come in, even just to say hi," owner Becky Hawes said Monday. "I've always wanted to do something like this. I've always worked for other people, and since we retired, I thought we should try a business of our own. It's something I've always wanted to see if I could do."

Hawes co-owns the business with her husband, Rick, who recently retired from Union Pacific Railroad. His retirement provided the final push for the Hawes to try out the retail market, and they began talking about opening the store in January.

"Rick just retired from the railroad, and we didn't want to become sedentary couch potatoes. We thought we should have a hobby, so while he's golfing, I'm going to do this, and when he's not golfing, he's going to help me," Hawes said with a laugh. "We're only going to be open one day a week, on Thursdays, so it's something just for fun and to keep us active."

In addition to finding inventory she thought people would enjoy, Hawes said the hardest part of the business process was decided on a name.

"I was trying to find something that nobody had, and this just stuck. It was probably one of the hardest things to do because I wanted something bright and cheery," she said.

"It's a place to come have fun while you're here, no pressure," Hawes said. The Hermiston Chamber of Commerce will host a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the store at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, and the store will be open its regular hours, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. To contact Peachy Keen, visit the store, 81156 N. Hwy 395, or call 541-567-0242.
