HERMISTON — Avon Sherwood Melby died Tuesday, March 18, at her home in Hermiston at the age of 89.

Avon was born in Scio on Feb. 21, 1914, to Harry and Esther Edgar Sherwood. She had been a longtime resident of Heppner.

She attended Linfield College and worked as a free lance writer for The East Oregonian, Walla Walla (Wash.) Union Bulletin, KUMA Radio Station, Heppner Gazette Times and The Oregonian.

She was a member of the Eastern Star and Soroptimist Club.

"Avon was influenced by each one she knew and from each contact compassion grew. She returns to nature, the sea and the sky, and in the two she will never die."

Avon is survived by her husband, Arnold Melby of Hermiston; two daughters, Kathy Turner of Boardman and Sue Timm of Pocatello, Idaho; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Disposition was by cremation. A private family memorial will be held at a later date.

Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one's choice.
