Stanfield Police took two suspects into custody at Pilot Travel Center, 2115 S. Highway 395, Stanfield, on Jan. 2., according to Stanfield Police Chief Byron Zumwalt. Zumwalt said the suspects may have stolen a car. They may have also taken merchandise from Walmart in Pendleton, he said, though, by 2:30 p.m., formal charges had not been made.

Pilot employees, working at the store after the suspects were taken, said they could not comment on the incident. People outside, who were waiting for a Greyhound bus, said they witnessed police, with dogs, checking out a red Hyundai Sonata, which was parked at the station. A filled, unzipped suitcase was in the back seat of the car after police had left.
