Editor’s Note: This story is part of an ongoing spotlight of Hermiston School District’s maintenance department for the month of April.

When Sunset Elementary School students and staff come in each morning, the school is sparkling — thanks to the efforts of Leticia Bautista.

Bautista is the school’s night custodian, and was recently selected by staff as the school’s classified employee of the year. She was honored, along with staff from the district’s other schools, at a school board meeting March 11.

Bautista has worked at Sunset for five years, and stays busy throughout the afternoons and evenings cleaning the school. She has worked in the district since 2011.

“I clean the classrooms — vacuum, clean sinks, empty sharpeners, whiteboards, desks, bathrooms” she said.

Bautista said she enjoys her job, but it is a lot of work for one person.

Her colleagues noticed her hard work when they nominated her, citing her positive attitude and willingness to help.

“Leticia is always busy and rarely has time to interact, but briefly does with a smile and professionalism,” said one staff member in their comments. “Leticia is very passionate, very diligent in what she does and knows her job well.”
