A number of area schools, community organizations and restaurants are planning special events in the upcoming days to honor veterans. Activities include:


•The annual Veterans Day Breakfast is Friday at 8 a.m. at the Hermiston Conference Center, 415 S. Highway 395.

Sponsored by the Hermiston Chamber of Commerce, the free event includes guest speakers, a slide show, singing and a local dance group. Family members and friends of veterans are invited to attend. For more information, contact Kelly Schwirse at 541-567-6151 or

•A free Veterans Day S.O.S. Lunch for all active and retired veterans and immediate Gold Star family members is available Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Chuckwagon Cafe, 81027 N. Highway 395, Hermiston.

Assistants who transport disabled veterans to the meal can also eat for free. People are invited to bring medals, photos, memorabilia and stories to share. For more information, call 541-567-6329.

•Note, due to unanticipated maintenance expenses, Hermiston Elks Lodge No. 1845 will not be hosting its annual dinner this year. For questions, call 541-567-6923.


Local veterans will be honored Thursday at 10 a.m. at Sam Boardman Elementary School. The event includes music, words of gratitude and guest speaker Sgt. Andy Kimmell of the U.S. Army 160th. Veterans and a guest are welcome, which includes a free lunch. RSVP by calling Heather Noble at 541-481-7383.


Veterans will be honored during events organized by the Echo School District.

A parade kicks off the activities Thursday at 10 a.m. in front of the school. It will continue down Main Street, circling around and returning to the school. An assembly starts at 1 p.m. in the school’s gymnasium. It features a keynote speaker, music and a FFA presentation. A reception with cake follows in the commons.

A special assembly honoring veterans is Thursday at 2:54 p.m. in the gym at Stanfield Secondary School.

In addition, the student body is collecting items for Soldier Boxes. Non-perishable items — including chapstick, toothpaste, jerky, gum, socks — are being collected to be sent to soldiers overseas.

The Girl Scouts of Oregon and Southwest Washington are hosting a free turkey dinner for veterans.

The meal will be served Friday at 5 p.m. at New Hope Church — formerly Umatilla Baptist Church — 146 Columbia St., Umatilla. Veterans may bring a loved one with them to the meal. The gathering encourages a time of story-telling.
