HERMISTON — The Hermiston SpudFest is no more.

The Downtown Hermiston Merchants association has cancelled the annual event for lack of interest on the part of downtown business owners.

On April 10, downtown business representative Jacqueline Mack Hill sent 50 letters urging members to call if they wanted the celebration to continue. Only two people had shown up for the SpudFest planning meeting two weeks prior.

“Please note that simply wanting (SpudFest) to go on will not be enough, as DHMA must have help from downtown businesses to put on the SpudFest ? actual participation and assistance will be needed,” Mack Hill wrote. She gave business owners ten days to respond.

On Wednesday, Mack Hill informed members that “nearly no offers” to help had come in. (For the full story, see the April 24, 2001 issue of the Hermiston Herald.)
