HPD searching for

hit-and-run driver

Hermiston police are searching for a driver who fled the scene Tuesday after after running over a man who was in a motorized wheelchair.

HPD?acting Chief Jason Edmiston said the man wasn’t injured.

The vehicle was described as a green 2002 Jeep Cherokee with Washington plates. It struck the man and his wheelchair at about 3:55 p.m. at North First Street and West Elm Avenue.

A witness called 911 and told emergency dispatchers the man was in the crosswalk when the Jeep “struck him and knocked him out of the chair and to the ground,” according to the Hermiston police activity log.

The Jeep’s driver never made contact with the man, the caller said, and instead “took off.”

The driver parked the Jeep a short distance away, Edmiston said, and then fled on foot. Police are trying to track down the owner of the vehicle with the help of police in Pasco, Wash.

Edmiston said even if the man on the scooter wasn’t hurt, the driver was required to stop, give assistance and provide contact and registration information.
