HERMISTON — Ben Kilgour and Scott Kelman face difficult challenges playing hockey for the Tri-City Americans. Last Tuesday morning, however, they encountered a different challenge — a thundering herd of excited middle school students.

The two Western Hockey League players accompanied assistant coach Blake Wesley to Sandstone Middle School to speak to students at the request of Rick Sherman, Sandstone band and P.E. teacher.

This is the fourth time Sherman, an avid hockey fan, has arranged a visit from Tri-City American hockey players. He noted that the students love to meet the players and have the chance to ask them questions.

“I think our kids need to be exposed to athletes at this level and understand that they have to keep their education going while they are on the team,” Sherman said. (For the full story please see the January 22, 2002 issue of the Hermiston Herald.)
