Hermiston Cross Country teams outpaced the competition during the Willamette University Invitational in Salem this weekend.

Both the men's and women's teams took first place, and Jordan Ringe and Sammantha McCloud took first individually.

"They beat some teams that are ranked very high in the state," said coach Jake Puzey. "We had several standout races."

Ringe and McCloud also had personal best times for the meet.

"They are two of the top individuals in the state based on their times," Puzey said.

Currently the Hermiston teams are both ranked second in the state, and Puzey is looking forward to a strong season.

The men's team win was especially encouraging because two of Hermiston's top runners, Alex Ringe and Antonio Ortiz, were not well enough to run.

Even so, both teams had three runners in the top five, and four in the top ten.

Jordan Ringe placed first with a time of 15:49.05, Terry Johnsen placed third with a time of 16:18.20. Antonio Gonzalez placed fourth with a time of 16:23.10, and Johnathan Larson placed 10th with a time of 16:52.30.

For the girls, Sammantha McCloud placed first with a time of 19:25.70, Leslie Macias placed third with a time of 19:47.6, Kimberly Macias, placed fifth with a time of 20:02.95, and Shoni Schimmel placed sixth with a time of 20:09.40. Hermiston will host their next meet this Friday, starting at 3:30 on the McNary Golf Course.
