HERMISTON — Over a week removed from their last baseball game action, the AAA American Legion team will host the Hermiston Heat Summer Tournament Friday, Saturday and Sunday at Shockman Field, east of downtown.

Hermiston is 7-6 on the year and last played June 25 when they were swept 12-8, 15-6 by Walla Walla.

“We’ve had a lot of basketball camp and football interference,” he said.

This week’s tournament is expected to draw a full roster, save for Dean Peters, who will be playing in the Babe Ruth district tournament. Matt Bergstrom, who has anchored the pitching staff, will likely start the Friday morning game, as he will not be available Sunday.

Depew said that the Heat will play early games on each of the first two days, preventing other teams from complaining about bad draws and preventing heat exhaustion for Hermiston.

“It will definitely be a test, going five games in three days,” Depew said.

He explained that Hermiston is as deep as any team in the tournament pitching wise. Bergstrom, Kevin Skogley, Jared Zabransky, Nick Sanchez and Mario Martinez provide the Heat with five strong starters.

“We’re going to throw the whole staff,” Depew said.

“It’s going to be a busy three days."
