Wayne, Helfer

HERMISTON — Wayne Otis Helfer, 74, of Hermiston died Oct. 13, at Good Shepherd Community Hospital in Hermiston.

Mr. Helfer was born Aug. 26, 1928, to William Crawford and Ruth Moore Crawford Helfer in Denison, Wash. He married Marlene Welch on Dec. 29, 1977.

He had been a contractor for the Union Pacific Railroad in building bridges and buildings. He retired in 1973.

Mr. Helfer lived in Walla Walla, Wash., for 50 years before moving to La Grande. He was a member of the National Rifle Association. He was also an incredible cook and had passed on that trait to his children. And he had the amazing ability to stretch a dollar.

He liked working in his garden and growing plants. He had a green thumb and he could grow anything.

He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Ruth Crawford, and his wife, Marlene Helfer.

Mr. Helfer is survived by six children, two brothers, two sisters, 10 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

A private Celebration of Life service was held at the Summerville Cemetery in Summerville. Arrangements were made under the direction of Loveland Funeral Chapel in La Grande.
