Hermiston’s Cindy Griggs won the championship in her division at the Cowboy Mounted Shooting Association World Championships in Amarillo, Texas, in October.

Griggs and several other Columbia Basin Mounted Shooters placed at the event.

In mounted shooting, riders race a set pattern while shooting .45 caliber single-action revolvers with blank ammunition at balloons. The sport calls for good horsemanship and sharp aim.

“I was practically born on a horse,” Griggs said. “It’s so much fun and really rewarding to me to see how I can train the horse to do what I want.”

Other Hermiston shooters who rode in the championships included Blair Phillipi, who won his men’s division, and Colleen Winfrey, who placed third in hers.
