Irene Mata Gomez

HERMISTON Irene Mata Gomez died Friday, Nov. 29, 2002, at her daughter's home in Hermiston at the age of 80.
Irene was born Feb. 15, 1922, in Kingsville, Texas, to Pedro and Juana (Morales) Mata. She lived in Weslaco, Texas, until she was 19, when she married Tomas Gomez in Monterrey, Mexico, on Aug. 4, 1941. They lived in Weslaco until they moved to Grandview, Wash., in 1950. They also lived in Othello, Wash., for a short time. They moved to Hermiston in 1975.
She worked for various potato processing plants in the area before retiring. Her husband, Tomas, died in 1978.
She attended the Catholic Church.
Irene loved her grandchildren and took care of them when they were little. She loved to cook Mexican food for them. She also loved flowers and always frew a wonderful flower garden.
She is survived by her daughter, Minerva "Minnie" Bethel of Hermiston; brothers, Juan Loera, Baldemar Loera, Celso Loera and Crispin Loera, all of Weslaco, Texas; sisters, Marcelina Sanchez of Grandview, Wash., Guadalupe Tapia of Weslaco, Texas, and Enedina Manzanero of California; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Tomas Gomez, in 1978; her parents, Pedro and Juana; and a sister, Eudosia Jasso.
Recitation of the Rosary was held Monday, Dec. 2, 2002, at Burns Mortuary Chapel in Hermiston. Mass of Christian Burial was held Tuesday, Dec. 3, at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Angels Catholic Church in Hermiston. A private cremation followed the mass. Inurnment of the cremains will be held at the Hermiston Cemetery at a later date.
Memorial contributions may be made to Our Lady of Angels Catholic Church.
Burns Mortuary of Hermiston was in charge of the arrangements.
