HERMISTON — Arson is suspected in the fire that destroyed Funland Community Playground early Saturday morning.

Around 2:45 a.m. Hermiston firefighters were called to the scene of the fire to find a large part of the structure fully engulfed in flames.

After the fire was out, at the scene near the donor board, someone laid a small bouquet of flowers and a sympathy card written in child-like handwriting that reads, “This is a sad thing. Our hearts are with you.”

“This is emotional,” said Lt. Jerry Roberts of the Hermiston Police Department. “Many of the people from the community were there to witness the damage for themselves. Many of them had been a part of the volunteers that built the structure about five years ago.” (For the full story please see the July 31, 2001 issue of the Hermiston Herald.)
