WALLA WALLA — Edith Rose Blankenship died Thursday, Sept. 27, at St. Mary Medical Center in Walla Walla, Wash., at the age of 83.

She was born July 5, 1924 at Pipers Gap, Virg., to Dilver Leroy and Stella Emeline (Payne) Brown. Edith moved from Galax, Virg., to Hermiston in 1960. She lived in Echo and Hermiston where she met Sam Blankenship and they were married on March 10, 1970 at Dayton, Wash. Sam passed away in 1996. Edith was a homemaker and she loved hunting, watching wildlife, driving up Butter Creek looking for rattlesnakes, playing with her great-grandchildren, and trips to Jackpot, Nev. George Ritter was her companion and travel friend for the past seven years. Edith lived in Union for the past six years. She enjoyed life to the fullest.

She is survived by daughter, Connie and her husband, Dean Smith of Hermiston; stepdaughter, Ona Blankenship of Grand Coulee, Wash.; son, James Blankenship of Boardman; stepson, Gordon Blankenship of Stanfield; brothers, Frank Brown of Hermiston, Murl Brown of Boise, Idaho, Dale Brown of Hillsville, Virg., Maynard Brown of Galax, Virg., and Duane Brown of Galax, Virg.; sister, Mary Lou Davis of Hillsville, Virg.; companion, George Ritter of Union; five grandchildren, Shelby and her husband, Aczael Valdez of Kennewick, Wash., Ashley and her husband, Josh Bequette of Hermiston, Benjamin and his wife, Diane Gabriel of Clatskanie, Daryn Brown and Kristina Brown; five great-grandchildren, Zaydean Valdez, Felicity Bequette, Courtney Gabriel, Carrissa Gabriel, and Charity Gabriel; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Sam Blankenship; son, Joseph Nelson Blankenship; stepdaughter, Kimberly Blankenship; and brother, Lavon Brown.

A Celebration of Life Gathering will be held on Sunday, Oct. 7, at 2 p.m. at Connie Smith's home at 29224 Bloom Road, Hermiston. For directions please call (541) 567-5377. Disposition was by cremation. A private family viewing was held earlier at Burns Mortuary of Hermiston.
