Echo Ione used a nine-point scoring advantage in the final quarter to steal a 48-43 win over upset-minded Echo on Tuesday night.
Kip Krebs led three Cardinal players in double-figures with 15 points, while Matt Hams kicked in 12 and Alan Reitmann added 11.
C.J. Zita led all Echo scorers with 14 points and pulled down six rebounds, while sophomore Andy McFarlane poured in 11 points.
Echo brought the intensity that has come to be expected in a clash with Ione, but a handful of critical missteps put the Cougars under pressure, and their defense finally yielded in the fourth quarter, which saw the Cardinals put in 23 points.
"We were up six with about six minutes to play, and Ione went on a run and took the lead," Echo head coach Aaron Shepherd said. "We fought back, but we came up short."
Despite the loss, Shepherd was pleased with the effort and intensity shown in the defeat.
"I'm proud of the effort my players give night in, night out," Shepherd said. "The kids played a great game, we just had some costly turnovers in a stretch of the fourth quarter."
