The Oregon Department of Transportation will begin paving 3.5 miles of Diagonal Road  (Oregon Highway 207) in Hermiston on May 9.

ODOT spokesman Tom Strandberg said the project will include overlaying two inches of new asphalt on Diagonal Road between Townsend Road and Spearman Road. ODOT maintenance crews will perform the work, beginning near Townsend Road and continuing north about one-half mile a day.

Depending on weather conditions, Strandberg said, the paving operation is expected to begin the second week of May and take about two weeks to complete. Work typically will take place Monday through Thursday between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m., with work on Fridays if needed.

Motorists can expect flaggers and pilot cars directing lane closures with delays of up to 20 minutes.

Also on tap in the near future in Hermiston is a new pedestrian crossing between Good Shepherd Medical Center and the medical offices located on the other side of West Elm Avenue and a project to widen East Main Street.

The proposed project will widen East Main between Northeast Seventh Street and Northeast 10th Street by approximately 8 feet.
